Removing County Court Judgements

When a County Court Judgement (CCJ) is issued, the credit reference agencies are normally informed as soon as the Judgement is recorded by the courts. CCJ records are kept at county courts in England and Wales for six years and they will also show on your credit file for the same amount of time.

If you have a County Court Judgement on your credit file that has been satisfied but is still showing as outstanding, or you have a CCJ listed that is incorrect, there are a number of ways that you can apply to have your file corrected.

If you have paid a Judgement within one month, you can request that the court cancels the entry and removes it from your records. It should also be removed from your credit reference file, so do get a copy a month or so after the court has cancelled the entry and double check that it is no longer showing on your credit report.

Where you have paid the debt one or more months after the Judgement, your county court records can be marked as ‘satisfied’. To do this you will need to pay the court a fee – typically £10 - and you will need to prove that you have settled the debt. Normally a receipt from the claimant will suffice.

You will then be issued a Certificate of Satisfaction by the Court and the credit reference agencies should be notified by them that the debt is no longer outstanding. However, the Judgement will normally remain on your credit reference file for six years.

If your credit file shows a CCJ that you feel is incorrect, then contact the court that recorded the Judgement for advice on what to do next.

If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland and have a satisfied debt, you will need to take different steps. The main point to remember is that when you have settled the debt, make sure that you get a receipt from the person or organisation to whom you owe money.

In Scotland you can write to Registry Trust Limited and ask them to record the Decree (which is the Scottish version of a Judgement) as ‘satisfied’. You will also need to send the receipt to the credit reference agencies too so that your records can be updated.

In Northern Ireland, you need to contact The Enforcement of Judgements Office who deal with satisfied debts. For a fee and with proof that the debt has been cleared, the Office will issue you with a ‘Paid In Full’ notice that can be sent to the credit reference agencies.
